About six months ago I began a simplification journey, which really came to a head last month. It involved a drastic clear-out of my home and workspace, culminating in a 40% reduction of our books and a 75% reduction of my clothes and shoes! I must have taken two car-loads of things to the charity shop and recycled just as much.
Part of my simplification journey is to define my personal style - so much easier now that I have streamlined things! I'm a lover of forests and woodlands, moors and coasts, so much of my wardrobe consists of easy staples and cosy knits. Having said that, when I do venture into the real world for buying trips or client meetings I'd be lying if I said it doesn't feel good to leave behind the mud and the wellingtons in favour of a more luxe look. This is the time when I pull out my favourite jewels and tried-and-tested accessories. I love crossover pieces which work both rurally and in the city; classics like a handmade leather bag, a grey cashmere sweater, or a plain antique rose gold wedding band...or indeed a unique watch which goes with everything.
During my wardrobe edit, I realised something quite unusual - I didn't actually own a watch! It's not the most professional of admissions, but I've been using my phone to keep track of the time ever since I can remember. It doesn't feel great when you have to put down your coffee and your suitcase in the middle of the street when you're late for your train, and then have to rummage in your bag/pocket for your phone! So, as part of my simplification/organisation kick, I'm really happy to welcome my first watch in about 15 years to my jewellery box!
I chose the 'Frankie' watch in dark sandalwood and smoke, by American watch company JORD Wood Watches. It actually does have a delicate sandalwood aroma! Sandalwood has an ancient spiritual history, is used in ayurveda and aromatherapy, and has long been thought of as being protective of the wearer.
I've come across wooden watches before which feel cheap and scratchy, but this piece feels like a little piece of luxury. The watch is beautifully constructed and wonderfully smooth; all their watches are finished with a natural oil, and they even send you a little bottle and a buffing cloth to maintain the finish.
I was drawn to the androgynous look of the plain dark grey face, but I love the way this is offset by more feminine accents of rose gold.
It goes perfectly with my my favourite winter wardrobe staples of charcoal cashmere and grey merino wool, which I accent with natural vegetable-tanned leather belts and bangs handmade by a local traditional saddler.
Now that I've cleared out so many items of clothing to only the items which really bring me joy and which I know I wear, choosing what to wear is a piece of cake. Then it's time to move on to accessories, and for any jewellery obsessive this is always the best part of putting together an outfit!
I personally prefer the look of men's watches; I love the contrast of an oversized man's watch on a woman. And - as I found out during my wardrobe clearance - many of my favourite clothing pieces are actually from mens' ranges. I have a grey tweed Superdry jacket, some soft brown leather chelsea boots by Barbour, and a green lambswool Toggi jumper (shown below) - plus ALL my weatherproof hiking gear!
JORD also offers custom engraving on your watch itself, or on the wooden presentation box, as well as custom sizing - all you have to do is send them your wrist measurement and they'll make sure your watch fits perfectly.
Right now JORD Wood Watches are running a contest where you can win a $100 gift code to use on their website.
